Chicago ACL Treatments Specialities image

Widely distinguished as the leading provider of orthopaedic services to patients throughout the Greater Chicago Metropolitan Area, Hinsdale Orthopaedics has been in the region for more than 60 years. We are also recognized for our outstanding ACL treatments, MCL treatments, LCL treatments and PCL treatments. The Anterior Cruciate Ligament, or ACL, is one of the major four ligaments of the knee joint that coordinates function and promotes stability. If a person injures their ACL, the ACL treatment most often involves surgery. However, individuals who are not particularly active, may, on the other hand, select a strengthening program rather than surgery. Most likely the strengthening program will take between six and 10 months of complete. Athletic individuals are more inclined to choose surgery for their preferred ACL treatment. Consequently, when our Chicago neighbors require ACL treatments, Hinsdale Orthopaedics is the only name they need to know.

Chicago MCL Treatments

The Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) is a wide, thick band which runs down the inner part of the knee from the femur to about four to six inches from the top of the tibia. Its functions involve preventing over-extension of the leg, stabilizing the knee and allowing the knee to rotate. Frequently, Chicagoans engaged in sports sustain blunt force to the outside of the knee causing the MCL to tear. Initial symptoms of an MCL tear are: pain or tenderness; stiffness; swelling and the knee locking or catching. The most common MCL treatments are:

  • R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compression & Elevation);
  • To ease pain and swelling take pain relievers; and
  • Wear lightweight cast or brace.

Tears usually respond well to nonsurgical MCL treatments, and recovery depends largely upon the severity of the injury. The LCL or Lateral Collateral Ligament, is a thin band that runs along the outside of the knee and connects the thighbone (femur) to the fibula. The tears to the LCL occur most often as the result of direct blows to the inside of the knee. LCL treatments depend mainly upon whether the ligament responds well to treatment. Chicago patients who have more severe injuries frequently require surgery; while less damaged LCL tears usually heal with nonsurgical treatment. As stated previously, the length of recovery for a Chicago patient is directly related to the seriousness of the injury.

Chicago LCL Treatments

LCL treatments for minor injuries of Chicagoans consist of: periods of rest; bracing; and physical therapy. Surgical LCL treatments usually take between one and two hours. The PCL, or Posterior Cruciate Ligament, is only about two inches long and joins the femur to the tibia at the back of the knee. As the strongest ligament in the knee, when the PCL tears, it is usually due to more traumatic injuries than sports injuries. Isolated PCL tears are most commonly treated with rehabilitation than with surgery. In the event the PCL involves other injuries, the most likely surgical procedure is to reconstruct the PCL. Irrespective of the PCL treatments they will require, Chicago patients consistently choose Hinsdale Orthopaedics. What’s more, not only will we always strive to meet their expectations, but we will probably surpass them. Besides Hinsdale, we have offices in: Elmhurst, Joliet, New Lenox, Naperville, Western Springs and Westmont.
